Media! Wowee!

Media! Wowee!

I really want to say a big thanks to every reporter and interviewer that talked to me about our project and #YEG100LOVE throughout January and February. It was wonderful to be able to share our ideas and explain a little bit more about what the project is all about. We have create a Media & Press area on this site so that you can see what coverage we are getting (and, most importantly, it helps us keep track of it all!) I’m so pleased with the positive responses from people who see read, listen or see us in the media and I’m very grateful for the exposure. Thanks,...

What is #Yeg1000Love and, more importantly, what is the point?

What is #Yeg1000Love and, more importantly, what is the point?

Today we started handing out love letters to the people of Edmonton in an event I called #Yeg1000Love or “One thousand love”. Throughout the course of three days,  groups of volunteers will be handing out love letters to random strangers on the LRT, at West Edmonton Mall and downtown. I figured some people, after hearing about the event or receiving a letter, might have some questions, so I wanted to answer them up easily in one post! Enjoy   What do the love letters contain? They are not messages saying “I’m in love with you” or “I want you” or “You’re so sexy”. These letters are filled with words of encouragement, support, jokes, high fives, quotes and any sort of positive message. They are meant to bring a smile to someone’s face, remind them they are important, worthwhile and perfect as they are and to encourage them to show love to others not just on Valentine’s Day but every day throughout the year.  Where did these letters come from? Technically, anyone can write a love letter anywhere. The letters we are handing out for this event, however, were made at our February 9th workshop in Edmonton. Almost 60 people came out and they wrote just over 1,000 letters. How many letters total have you handed out over the past year and a half? In Edmonton, 4,600. There are also other people in other parts of the world writing Love Letters 2 Strangers so the number is more of a local count. Is this just a Valentine’s Day gimmick or  an event exclusive to Valentine’s? To some, it is going to seem that way but no, it’s not. We host workshops throughout the year (at schools, businesses, youth conferences, and for the public) that talk about the power of the written word and how a small act of kindness can make a big difference in a life of someone else. The love letters made at workshops are encouraged to be taken home and distributed throughout the attendees community, family/friends and neighborhoods. Of course, on Valentine’s Day, we just wanted to spread a little extra love, so, we created this love letter extravaganza! How do you pay for the supplies to make the love letters? For 13 months, the project and all the supplies were bought using my own money. I was fortunate enough to receive a $1,000 grant from the Awesome Edmonton foundation in September of 2012  when I pitched my idea. This money has done so much to help offset some of the costs to renting room for workshops and buying supplies.  Other than that, the project continues to run on personal money as well as small donations from people who support the initiative. Is Love Letters 2 Strangers all about “romantic love”? Not really, no. Romance is beautiful and fun and a great thing to experience and have. This project, however, addresses a different kind of love: the kind of love you show to person who needs help on an icy walkway or a door opened for them; the kind of love that you extend to someone not because you are expected to but because the moral, good part of your heart tells you it is the right thing to do. If it seems like a totally unexpected gesture, that’s probably because it is...

Love Letters 2 Strangers – Edmonton Sun Article

We had QUITE the successful workshop on Saturday and with the final count of letters reaching 1,034, we have succeeded in making enough letters for our #yeg1000love event this coming week! I had a great talk with the upbeat and adorable Linda Hoang (@Lindork on twitter) about the workshop, the love letter handing out craziness to come and how we use the interwebs to share the project with others. To read the article she wrote click here. Thanks,...

I can’t wait to see all the new & returning faces as we pack the Woodcroft Library today with people to create some unique and heartfelt love letters to strangers! We will be featuring a newly made video by yours truly that will explain the two main goals of the workshop and show off some of the letters from previous writers. Metro Edmonton – V-Day Celebrations

I was so surprised and thrilled to see that Metro Edmonton has named Love Letters 2 Strangers (and, more specifically, #yeg1000love) one of the top 5 ways to spend Valentine’s day! We want people to be able to show love and kindness to others all year long but we are making a special point to throw some extra love at the city in the next few weeks. We will also be involved in the third mentioned activity for Edmontonians – skating at city hall on Feb. 14th from 4-7! Love Letters 2 Strangers will have a little table not only filled with letters to hand out but with supplies to make your own love letters. Thanks, Metro, you guys are...
